What Does an Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) Therapy Session Look Like?

ESDM therapy revolves around play-based learning. Every activity integrates into play, using natural, engaging reinforcers. Children learn best through play, and that includes children with autism. They deserve to learn in a fun, enjoyable way. So, what can you expect during an ESDM therapy session?

The Structure of an ESDM Therapy Session

An Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) session always begins with a warm greeting. The session kicks off with a ‘hello song’, which helps the Certified ESDM Therapist:

  • Capture the child’s attention
  • Regulate the child’s arousal levels (or focus)
  • Establish joint attention between the therapist and the child

After the greeting, the session includes a mix of floor-based activities. Sometimes, the child may choose to bring a toy to the table for more structured play.

Does the Child Get to Choose the Activity?

Yes, the child chooses their activities. While the Certified ESDM Therapist selects toys and activities before the session, the child decides when and which activity they want to engage in. This approach keeps the child motivated and engaged throughout the session. When children feel engaged, they learn more effectively. During each activity, the therapist works on 5-6 developmental goals. The teaching can happen either at the table or on the floor, wherever the child feels most comfortable.

Are All Activities Done at the Table?

No, activities shift between the floor and the table. This movement is a crucial aspect of the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), keeping the child engaged and learning effectively. Throughout the session, the therapist ensures:

  • The child stays focused.
  • The child’s arousal levels remain optimal.
  • The child continues learning.

Our goal is to engage the child in the social loop every 10-20 seconds. The therapist also monitors and tracks the child’s performance every 15 minutes to assess progress during the session.

Is Teaching Happening Even Though It’s Play-Based?

Absolutely! While ESDM therapy uses a play-based approach, teaching remains a core focus. The Certified ESDM Therapist uses behavioural principles to teach the child new skills every 10-20 seconds. This high rate of instruction ensures consistent progress while keeping the child engaged. Our therapists excel at maintaining this balance between effective teaching and fun activities.

Every ESDM therapy session is both educational and fun for the child!
